Hi,

From what I have read it seems like Swiftel is a great ISP. I used to be on Optus high-speed cable, but then I had to switch to dialup. Now I am moving to Perth (Optus is not established there) and am looking for a new cable providor. I will most likely go with Swiftel, but I have a question about ADSL.

I checked out the modems mandatory for purchasing to use ADSL, what is the difference between a modem with one plug access and four plug access. I hope you get what I mean. I'm not too sure what they are used for myself so I can't explain it too well.

When I used to have Optus cable, my PC had to be on for anyone else in the house to be able to use the net (through LAN). This got a bit tedious but there was no way around it (besides setting up a 24x7 server). So if I purchase a ADSL modem with four plugs instead of one, would four PCs be able to access the net without a designated PC being turned on 24x7? Or is the four plug modem just a substitute for LAN.

I hope I have explained what i mean clearly enough.

Thanks for any information.

Alex

Yes, what you are talking about is a combo unit of a modem and router, in this case it is actually the router that is connected to the modem/Swiftel and the computers are connected to the router, sharing access this way, so any, all or none can be on and as long as the modem/router is on, you will be connected.

Also if you already have a Hub / Switch for your lan, you could just go the 1 port modem/router and run an uplink cable /crossover from the eth port on the modem/router to your old hub/switch. But there is only a $40 or so difference between a 1 port and 4 port.
U make the Choice :)
