hopefully a networking guru can help me, i am attempting to work out why my pings are so poor. if i try and ping the games servers in sydney (i am in sydney too) my pings look something like this:
Reply from 202.154.83.56: bytes=32 time=1370ms TTL=63
Reply from 202.154.83.56: bytes=32 time=658ms TTL=63
Reply from 202.154.83.56: bytes=32 time=1283ms TTL=63
Reply from 202.154.83.56: bytes=32 time=613ms TTL=63
however if i use the tool provided at forum-replies.cfm?t=120329#r27
in this case i am using: dan.redgumtech.com.au (the machine resides in melbourne)
this account can ping 202.154.83.56 at the following rates
Reply from 202.154.83.56: bytes=32 time=60ms TTL=57
Reply from 202.154.83.56: bytes=32 time=70ms TTL=57
Reply from 202.154.83.56: bytes=32 time=60ms TTL=57
Reply from 202.154.83.56: bytes=32 time=61ms TTL=57
i am confused, i am in sydney therefore i must be logically and i presume physically closer to the machine with the ip: 202.154.83.56, yet it takes longer for me to reach it than the dude in melbourne; can i presume that basically there could be something wrong at any layer? ie there could be something wrong with my modem: nb1300, something wrong with my switch conected to the modem: xnet 10/100 something wrong with the cabling in between me and the exchange? or anything else?
can someone give me some possible explanations for the bad pings? i am at a loss
cheers,
Nick
