hello there

i have a friend who took up the wireless service delivered by unwired in sydney.

unfortunately he's been unable to make it work with his mac.

has anyone taken up this service & had success with connecting a mac (os X) ? any special tips or techniques?

he's a relative newbie & i haven't seen his physical setup so far, but people telecom support desk has not been helpful (no mac knowledge there it seems).

pointers to RTFM, wireless modem docs/specs, etc fine

thks

the LED is red, i believe - a good signal but not perfect.

i'll be looking at it tomorrow & will post if i still can't get it sorted out

You need a PPP client in order to authenticate with the network.

The unwired device is like a Dialup modem, you are required to authenticate through the device. Alternatively you can purchase a router that can do the authentication for you provided it has a WAN interface port that you can plug your unwired device into.

mac os X has a built-in PPPoE client - is this sufficient?

Yes. I believe it is :) You need to have OS9 or higher. OSX is prefered (thats because it is also much better than OS9 too :D)

You will need to make sure you get the Ethernet modem and not the USB modem though for a mac.

The User Guide (http://www.unwired.com.au/support/UserGuide.pdf) on the Unwired (http://www.unwired.com.au) website gives you some help to setting it up on OS9/10.

I think they should hire some people with Mac / OSX knowledge. Macs are coming more popular in homes these days, as in most cases they are better for standard home use than a PC - but I will not go into that debate.

It seems a bit silly for a Full Service Telco with 25000+ customers not to have anyone with Mac knowledge in their support centre.

There is a user there with Mac knowledge in our support center.
