Just wondering...why does my IP address not resolve on most servers? (IRC)
(17:28) [!] Looking up your hostname...
(17:28) [!] Couldn't resolve your hostname; using IP address instead

The server I'm an IRCop on incidently.

It's not very important ofcourse, as the IP wont change.

I'm running a Dlink 504 Router, it's got auto-get DNS on and detecing the right DNS server(the sydney one). I've set the primary and secondary DNS servers to point to the sydney one and the backup respectively...
Just curious is all. No big deal about it.

In this scenario, I've normally seen it where the server either has a very low threshold on its resolution timeout, or where their DNS cache has a rapid expiry.

Assuming you get resolutions on some servers, but not others, you basically have to assume it's a problem with the resolver on the remote side of the connection.

Currently 218.214.2.209

And it's not just one server.

Apparantly my hostname (209.2.214.218.in-addr.arpa) resolves to itself

C:\WINDOWS\Desktop>tracert 209.2.214.218.in-addr.arpa
Unable to resolve target system name 209.2.214.218.in-addr.arpa.

Thanks. There is something wrong with the auto reverse delegations for that range. I'll have the sysadmin check it out.
